How long does the I-693 immigration exam take?

Two different "how long" questions matter when you're scheduling your USCIS I-693: how long the appointment itself takes, and how long until the sealed envelope is in your hands. Here's both timelines plus the most common reasons people get held up.

The short answer

Appointment: 45–60 minutes for most patients.
Sealed envelope in hand: Same day in 80%+ of cases at SimplyCare. Up to 5 business days if labs need to be finalized or a vaccine series needs a second dose.

Full timeline from scheduling to USCIS submission

  1. Day 0 — Schedule

Most patients book online or by phone and get an appointment within the same week. Family members can be booked back-to-back.

  2. Day of exam — 45–60 minutes

Check-in, history, physical exam, TB blood test, any needed vaccines, and the sealed I-693 envelope.

  3. Day of exam to Day 5 — Lab finalization (if needed)

Most labs result within 1–2 business days. The envelope is sealed only after every required result is documented.

  4. Anytime after — Submit to USCIS

Current USCIS policy: a properly signed I-693 has no expiration. You can submit it whenever your immigration attorney files.

What can slow things down

  • Incomplete vaccination records. Without proof of prior doses, USCIS requires the full schedule — which may mean coming back for a booster.
  • Positive TB blood test. Requires a follow-up chest X-ray; results typically add 3–5 business days.
  • Chronic conditions or past surgeries. May require records from another provider before the form can be sealed.
  • Mental-health or substance-use history. May require additional evaluation. Discuss openly at the visit — the civil surgeon is required to ask.

How to make it fast

  • Book a clinic that uses IGRA TB blood testing (not the old two-visit skin test).
  • Bring every vaccination record you have, including childhood and foreign records.
  • Bring a list of medications, surgeries, and any specialists you see.
  • Print the most current blank I-693 from uscis.gov the day before your visit.
